Coach Quentin Hillsman, a.k.a, “Coach Q”, is the driving force on the court.
The famed coach of the NCAA’s legendary Division I Syracuse Orange women’s team, Q began his career as a player for the St. Mary’s Seahawks. Like Sykes and Peterson, Hillsman was a point guard, making him uniquely suited for defense.
“He had great leadership, he had tremendous quickness and had tremendous court sense,” recalls Jay Gardner, coach of the Seahawks during Q’s time as a junior guard. One particular play stays with Gardner over 20 years later. It was during the Capital Athletic Conference tournament semifinal game in Hillsman’s junior season. St Mary’s and York College (Pennsylvania) were absolutely tied, with only a razor thin 10 seconds clicking down ominously on the clock. He was triple-teamed and backed away almost 10 feet, falling out of bounds — but just before, fired off an astonishing 3-point shot that had the Seahawks emerge victorious.
Exclaims Gardner, “It may be the greatest 3-point shot I’ve ever been around as a coach.”
After finishing as a player, he discovered his natural aptitude as a coach and never looked back. But that background as a player earns him the respect of the legendary players he now coaches as a legend himself.
“It makes him a lot more credible because he can relate,” Alexis Peterson says. “In my position, you can’t ask for something better than to have someone who can relate. He’s been at every level, so he brings that experience and knowledge.”
He has led the Orange to 8 winning seasons straight, 17 post-season victories, and was voted the Big East Conference Coach of the Year in 2008.
Q lives in the town of DeWitt, a suburb of the greater Syracuse Area in Onondaga County.
